A Shell Stood for Zero: A new sonic and sculptural installation by artist Kelsey Cruz-Martin. Working across writing, print, sculpture, and sound, her practice explores experiential knowledge, voice, and the relationship between language and the body.
The installation engages themes of armour, attention, and listening as a present-moment act, blurring boundaries between organic life and digital existence. Presenting a new series of sculptures, developed during a year-long fellowship as Cardiff Metropolitan University’s inaugural Freelands Fellow 2025/26. These works emerge from material and process experimentations, including ceramic shell and lost-wax aluminium casting, exposing uncanny resonances with the body.
Through form, language, and sound, A Shell Stood for Zero explores the limits of sonic representation, creating a dialogue between what is seen and heard in the gallery and what might extend beyond it. The installation creates a space to question what we choose to filter and what we allow ourselves to absorb.
