Something that comes up regularly in our one-to-one sessions with artists is the issue of unpaid opportunities that artists are offered or considering applying for. g39 is a supporter of the Paying Artists campaign and we think that it’s essential to a healthy and inclusive culture that artists are paid properly and creative careers are professionally respected.
We also understand that the creative community is vast and complex. We recognise that there can be viable creative solutions to budget restrictions, and that there might be times when the benefits of good opportunities are non-monetary. We think it’s important for artists to consider these issues carefully to avoid being exploited. We’ve been working with artist Florence Boyd who’s been working on a loose flowchart that acts as a set of prompts to consider when approaching unpaid opportunities.
