Onyeka Igwe, The Miracle on George Green (2022)

As part of the Jarman tour, join us for an afternoon talk by Onyeka Igwe. Onyeka is a British-Nigerian artist whose 2022 film in the Jarman screening, The Miracle on George Green is inspired by the 1993 protests in Wanstead that attempted to save a 250-year-old sweet chestnut tree from being cut down. During the resistance, schoolchildren wrote letters addressed to the tree, and Igwe uses these as a starting point to explore radical protests dating back to the 17th century.

A London born & based moving image artist and researcher, Onyeka's work asks: how do we live together? Not to provide answers but to pull apart the nuances of mutuality and co-existence in our deeply individualized world.

Onyeka’s video works have been screened at Modern Mondays, MoMA, Artists’ Film Club: Black Radical Imagination, ICA, London, 2017; Dhaka Art Summit, Bangladesh, 2020, and at film festivals internationally including the London Film Festival, 2015.
