This resource has been written for artists to give you an impression of how you can work in the public realm via commissions and residencies. It will help you identify your strengths and work out what kind of projects will be best suited to you.
Working in the public realm (ie working to a brief for a publicly funded project, such as a residency for a community organisation or a commission by a local authority or a business) is vastly different from working with a curator and audiences in a gallery or studio context. You should anticipate what these differences are, and whether your practice is suited to the public realm.
Simon Fenoulhet is an artist who plays with our preconceptions of the material world by manipulating everyday objects with unexpected outcomes. Simon Fenoulhet studied at both Newport and Cardiff Colleges of Art. Since then he has worked throughout Wales as an artist, educator and public art consultant, including a period as Deputy Director of Cywaith Cymru.Artworks Wales between 1991 and 2002. He won the Gold Medal for Fine Art at the 2010 National Eisteddfod of Wales and now works freelance as an artist and arts consultant.
