Akiko and Masako Takada

Twins Akiko and Masako Takada work collaboratively with sculptures, installation and videos, often utilizing everyday materials and subverting them to unravel a sense of the fantastical within the quotidian.


Exemplifying a trend among the current crop of young Japanese artists, they are particularly engaged with issues of scale, creating sculptures out of minute, ephmeral materials such as pills, clothes pegs and pencil shavings. Transformed into boats, ladders, flowers and furniture, these objects maintain a sense of the prosaic, which is nonetheless skewed and strange.

Having studied to BA level in Tokyo, the twins continued their studies at Goldsmiths (2002-03) and then Slade School of Art, London (2003-05). Forthcoming and recent projects include Bird’s eye View (Setagaya Art Museum, Tokyo), and In Residence/In Retrospect (The ArtHouse residency, London). Their work is held in several public and private collections.
