Michal Iwanowski

b. 1977, Świebodzice, Poland
Lives and works in Cardiff

Michal Iwanowski is an artist working primarily in the medium of photography. His research is concerned with the representation of landscape as witness to personal narratives.

Michal’s practice sits at the intersection between photography, video and creative writing, and engages with themes of emigration, national identity, fugitive experience, and loss. An integral aspect of Iwanowski’s research is the performative of long distance walking. In April 2018, in response to the message 'Go home Polish' written on a wall in Cardiff Michal walked 1,200 miles from Wales to Poland. “The only way for me to find out where home was for me was to walk from my home in Cardiff where I have lived for 17 years, to the home of my birth in Poland, and to ask people along the way: ‘Where is it? Where is home? What does it mean if I tell you to go home?’”

In 2009 Michal, won the Emerging Photographer award by Magenta Foundation, and was awarded an Honourable Mention at Px3 Prix De Photographie, Paris. He has received Arts Council of Wales grants for his projects Clear of People and Go Home, Polish, both of which were nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, in 2017 for his book ‘Clear of People’, and in 2019 for the Go home Polish exhibition at Peckham24. His work has been exhibited and published worldwide, and has been acquired for the permanent collection of numerous institutions, including the National Museum of Wales.
