Sophie Lindsey, Art Lovers Life Drawing Class, 2018
Sophie Lindsey creates work that responds to specific contexts, environments and situations. In the past this has included gallery gift shops, health and safety regulations in a university, and bus journeys. Her work considers the potential and contradictions of public space through interventions that draw on, and challenges, their characteristics and functions, whilst engaging art with people in their everyday environment.
Inspired by the Artist Placement Group’s motto, ‘Context is half the work’, Sophie has a site-responsive practice, which allows her work to relate to the different sites, people and communities it inhabits. Her light-hearted approach to art utilises irony and humour as a method for subverting perceived hierarchies between different forms of cultural production.
Over the past year Sophie has developed a number of different projects, including the community-mapping project Funniest Joke in Cincinnati
, created for Wave Pool Gallery’s Art Space Is Your Space residency. This responded to a study ranking Cincinnati the least funny city in America. By collecting as many jokes as possible through community workshops, comedy nights and a portable joke booth, Sophie sought to build up an image of Cincinnati through the jokes told within it. The residency culminated with a chicken crossing the road parade and closing reception where visitors were able to vote for the funniest joke.
Sophie graduated in BA Fine Art: Critical Practice, University of Brighton, in 2014 and a Masters Performing Public Space, Fontys University of Fine and Performing Arts, Tilburg, the Netherlands in 2019. Notable work includes residencies with Can Serrat, Art Gene, Spit and Sawdust, Wave Pool and working in various capacities for Deveron Projects from 2015 - 2018.
