Wendy Short is an artist based between London and Ayrshire. She is motivated by how we make sense of the past, the present and our connections with one another. Wendy explores the passage of time, the historical uses of site and meaning attached to place though field recordings and the moving image. In doing so, she embeds herself in a context and makes interventions designed to excavate histories, informal networks and hidden narratives that may otherwise remain ignored or unpreserved.

During UNITe Wendy plans to research and develop a new film which takes the body as an archive and is inspired by events surrounding her mother’s kidney transplant. Patsy (working title) will be a film about time, mortality, microchimera and the power of dance.

Previous works include Overtime (2016-17) which documents the final months of a longstanding live/work space in East London prior to redevelopment. Wendy collaborated with current residents to stage events in the space featuring performances by previous tenants and making reference to the creative networks forged through collective living. These live recordings soundtrack the film, including a set based upon a dubplate of field recordings designed to evoke the spaces’ industrial past.

Natural Magic: Filmed Notes from Eigg (2018) was shot whilst on residency at Sweeney’s Bothy on the Eigg: an island known for being community owned, a world pioneer in sustainability and symbolised by the iconic An Sgurr (a volcanic plug from which the surrounding volcano has eroded over time). Drawing from her own community, Wendy collated messages written in lemon juice which were revealed by the heat of the Bothy’s wood burning stove in the absence of internet or mobile connection. The notes are cut with 16mm film documenting the island, which was eco processed using foraged plant material.

Wendy has an MA Experimental Filmmaking and an MA in Painting and Art History. Aside from her own work she has made films about creative processes and projects for University of the Arts London, The Jocelyn Herbert Archive and vocalist Ingrid Plum. Most recently Wendy was selected to participate in the 2020-21 London Creative Network at SPACE. She has had screenings in the UK and Berlin and is currently learning to play the theremin.
