David Cushway's work evokes an experience of the sublime by exploiting notions of our transient existence and the passage of time. Cushway challenges preconceptions of contemporary ceramics, working with clay as his starting point.
His finished works are never far from the artist's direct experience and Cushway often uses himself as the reference point including casts of the studio floor, his own teeth and his own head. Recent work includes slow motion capture of ceramic objects being shot or smashed.
David Cushway studied at University of Wales, Cardiff and has had solo exhibitions at Bath Spa University; The European Ceramics Work Centre, Holland; and Chapter, Cardiff. He recently completed a residency at Philadelphia Clay Studio, USA.
