Paul Becker
Paul Becker’s paintings explore themes of sexuality and violence, often through childhood or fairytales. His work is subtly shocking in a perversely engaging manner.
The representations of animals, fairies and children are used as a device to threaten and at the same time to sentimentalise these themes. This rendering, in patches of rough and delicately layered paint, leaves them malevolent and tender, even innocent. Becker’s painting’s are almost Trojan horse-like, within which lie more mysterious elements, prompting differing, almost contradictory emotional responses in the viewer.
Recent shows include Store, London; Contemporary Art Society, London; solo show at Vane, Newcastle, who also represent Becker.
