Neale Howells

b. 1965, Neath, South Wales
Lives and works in Port Talbot, Wales

The sprawling mass of scratchy writing in Neale Howells work references the graffiti and vandalism that covers much of contemporary urban life. His graffiti inspired paintings and drawings seem to reference TV, overheard conversations or snippets of information heard whilst tuning the radio. What the viewer is left with is a mass of arguing mark-making that leaves us unsure of how and when to proceed. Howells work seems a sprawling living ‘thing’ that has a life of its own.

Neale has recently taken to working in an abandoned industrial unit n Port Talbot. He has gradually developed a reputation as an outspoken critic of the Welsh cultural establishment, having two consecutive shows closed down by the council before the opening nights.

Recent exhibitions include John Martin Gallery, London in 2008 and Mission Gallery Swansea in January 2008. Neale was recently commissioned by the Manic Street Preachers to produce a recent Album cover.
