David Garner

b. 1958, Ebbw Vale, Wales
Lives and works in Argoed, Wales

David Garner is amongst the few artists whose work is quite unambiguously political. As befits one whose background is in industrial South Wales, he uses objects that are made, salvaged and bought to reflect on society and its organisation.

In a world of prevarication, evasion and doubt, Garner presents us with certainties, truth to material and the truth of moral outrage. For the exhibition Memento at g39, David examined subjects that are often unpalatable and awkward to talk about in company, the awkward truth that everything passes. The work is dramatic, almost melodramatic in its presentation. Taking the form of tableau the work is a juxtaposition of elements, a poignant placing of objects that hold associations.

David Garner was born in Ebbw Vale, South Wales. He studied at Newport and Cardiff College of Art and the Royal College, London. He has exhibited widely throughout the UK and Ireland including the National Museum Cardiff, the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow and the City Gallery, Leicester. David has showcased work alongside internationally acclaimed artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Jenny Holzer, Bill Viola and Mark Wallinger. His work has been purchased by the Contemporary Arts Society of Wales and the ‘Richard and Rosemary Wakelin Purchase Award’.
