Description: At a time when our culture often appears to be hopelessly fragmented and our art irreparably isolated, one can occasionally see in Neri`s work a glimmer of a unity that art has enjoyed in earlier ages and other cultures, when it has been less jealous of its autonomy, more willing to share its functions with religion and magic. A collection of Neri`s work sometimes suggests the kind of place that is set aside in certain primitive societies for the making of ritual images - then hastily abandoned by its artisans in the aftermath of some unknown catastrophe, leaving behind icons in various stages of completion and potency. Yet these images are clearly also of our own time and place. Fraught with the anxiety that gives expression to a society in which the role of art is increasingly problematic, these figures at the same time remind us of the commanding, totemic presence of the sculpture and other works of art that have survived from ancient civilizations in which was an integral expression of culture and life in general.
