Description: The publication of this text written twelve years ago whilst I was still a student, realises a long cherished ambition. The work comes from a very rich period, from the time when i first began to think and feel for myself as an artist. This is an edited version of the original, which itself was derived in the main from letters that i wrote to my mother. Many of the themes which appear in the writing, such as that of transformation and substitution; of the links between the name and the named; of relations between plans, actions, material and meaning; of covering and uncovering; of repetition and innovation, have continued to preoccupy me. Thus, although the reference is oblique, the text serves as an introduction to and a partial commentary on the sculpture that i make now.
