Description: Produced in partnership with the National network for Arts and Health, this crowded issue of MailOUT focuses on arts in health. The fact that creative activity and opportunity can help the health and well-being of individuals is well-known, the use of the arts as an element in improving the healing environment is long-established and creative techniques of addressing public health issues have been around for years. However, what is truly remarkable is the range, scope and reach of arts in the health context today, and the way its value is being recognised. A couple of decades ago, arts in health was promoted through the strong enthusiasm of a small scattering of committed individuals across the country. As is often the case, those strong enthusiasms picked up support a bit at a time, until it had the critical mass to gather speed. As with other areas of community arts, the climate over the last 8 years has favoured innovation and development, and there is an explosive acceleration of creative ideas, projects and programmes in all sorts of health contexts. MailOUT was overwhelmed with contributions for this edition, well beyond what we could do justice to, and we hope it gives some sense of the sheer energy and drive to experiment and explore that is there amongst health professionals, and is reflected and supported by artists and arts across the UK.
