Description: This exhibition. the most recent in a series which explores traditional artistic genres, takes a broad look at many of the themes and ideas implicit in the subject of still life. It also provides an opportunity to bring together work by a range of contemporary British artists, much of which has been purchased for the British Council Collection. From the full-scale installation of a contemporary alchemist`s desk by Mike Nelson to the playful interaction with buckets and chairs in videos by Wood and Harrison, most of the media available to the contemporary artist are represented here. A range of generations is also represented, from artists in their twenties to eminent senior artists such as Patrick Caulfield, once famously described as the `laureate of the public interior` and who, since emerging with the `pop` generation of the 1960s, has made the study of pubs, restaurants, kitchens and living rooms into a territory all his own.
