Description: Hannah Culwick may have been Britain`s first working-class-woman-artist, suggests Alison Marchant in her mixed media work, Relicta. Culwick donned various costumes of the nineteenth century, representing herself in guises inside and outside her social class. She took on the mantle of the privileged classes for whom she was in servitude, and equally, wearing make-up and clothes which portrayed her at the other end of the social spectrum, as a slave, chattel or farm labourer.
