Esyllt’s visual arts practice is underpinned by the need to consider language under tension. Working across different materials and disciplines she plays with translation between verbal and visual language.

My visual practice and approach to making is underpinned by an itch to consider language under tension. Using a range of materials and forms across printmaking, sound, performance, writing, film, and readymade conversations and objects, I play with translation between verbal and visual language to rearrange meaning and challenge the customs of communication, specifically bilingualism in Wales. I aim to make light of weighty ideas around language decline and lack of intellectual debate happening in and around Welsh, by drawing attention to the potential of mistranslation and making room for slippages and tensions. Recently, I’ve been developing writing for performances, film and radio to explore these gaps where new meanings, sounds and visuals can be made. This has led to translating written work into surreal visual landscapes through print, as well as transposing visual work into writing for audio.

Esyllt studied Welsh and Philosophy at Cardiff University and an Mlitt in Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art. Exhibitions include Pink Moon, The Revelator, Glasgow, and y sws mewn pinc, Arcade/Campfa, Caerdydd, 2023. Her performance, ‘Blobus a Phryderon Eraill’ at the National Eisteddfod in Pontypridd, won the Ifor Davies Award. She was Wales’ representative at Transpoesie Poetry Festival, Brussels this year.
