Unit#1: Siân Melangell Dafydd – Foxy

preview 14 November 2014

In the UNIT#1 space is a single object that has long been in Sian Melangell Dafydd’s family: a stuffed fox – ‘Foxy’ – in a glass case, purchased by her grandfather at the auction of the effects of the late Sir Henry Robertson of Palé, Llandderfel, Bala, in about 1948 and believed to have been created by the famed James Hutchins of Aberystwyth.

With a background in art history, Siân often returns to themes of seeing and sight, or in this taxidermied case, the absence of seeing. As viewers, we have the idea that we can look into the sightless glass eyes of the animal and 'know' it, without our gaze being returned. The installation coincides with the publication of a short story of the same name by Siân in association with g39 as a limited edition artist’s book.
