Jonathan Thomas’s practice is primarily an investigation into cinema, its construction and the various ways it mediates. He frames this using the genre of still life and its art-historical, cinematic and social contexts. For example, his recent work Modern Beauty 1 (2011) is a film collage that explores still lifes and interiors in narrative cinema.

As well as his art practice, he is co-director of DecemberLab – an artist-run, non-profit organisation that supports, promotes and develops artists’ moving image through production, exhibition, dialogue and education. Jonathan has also taught avant-garde cinema at the Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries as a visiting lecturer and he currently develops media content for distance learning at the University of Glamorgan.

Jonathan studied Media Production at undergraduate level and Moving Image at postgraduate level. He has 12 years’ community arts experience running video, animation and music workshops. His video work has been shown nationally and also in Europe and North America.
