Freya Dooley

b. 1989, Gloucestershire, UK
Lives and works in Cardiff, Wales

Freya works with words, voice and collage, using cut-ups of found and borrowed texts, literature, letters, snippets of conversations and earworm pop songs. Her recent work incorporates multi-layered aural textures containing repetitive forms and overlapping rhythms. She is interested in monologues and dialogues; through sound, moving image, drawing, performance and publication.

Much of her work looks at the briefest of moments between thought and speech, the point at which an internal monologue is made manifest, the spillages and fragments of thoughts and the slippage of meaning. Language is the tool by which we attempt to make the felt visible and understood. Repetition in Freya’s work is used to describe the insufficiency of a singular image, word or phrase to accurately represent an experience.

Freya has an interest in how narratives emerge around seemingly unconnected events, images and phrases. For this exhibition Freya is working for the first time with installation and moving image, exploring its relationship with poetry in its potential for metaphor, repetition, rhythm and rhyme.
