Sofia Hulten

Lives and works in Berlin, Germany

Sofia Hulten's work addresses the minutiae of neglected society, the overlooked detritus that is discarded because its usefulness has come to an end.

This poignant, childlike attitude is reminiscent of “bringing home a sick bird, thinking you can nurse it back to health, but it somehow not working out the way you thought. Or trying to patch someone up when you know they're going straight out to do it all again.” Once the repair and restoration has been attempted, and usually failed, Sofia replaces the newborn artefact from whence it came. Her impossible mission to breathe life into these dead things is a tenacious folly reminding us that our attempts to control or halt the inevitable entropy and chaos of our environment are a futile yet necessary action. In the face of insurmountable odds the individual fights on regardless of the chances of success.

Sofia lives and works in Berlin. Recent solo exhibitions include Mutual Annihilation, at Künstlerhaus Bremen and Auflösung, at Skulpturenpark Berlin Zentrum, Berlin in 2008.
