Paul Chaney

FieldMachine is a computer programme developed collaboratively by artist Paul Chaney and learning curator Kenna Hernly. It allows users to design systems for the autonomous self-provision of food and biofuel. FieldMachine asks the user to construct a nutritionally balanced diet from a wide selection of locationally specific crops selected from its database. Based on the user’s selections, FieldMachine calculates the precise amount of land needed to maintain the chosen diet on an annual basis using data from WHO, USDA, and the UN.
