Nia Metcalfe

b. 1982, Haverfordwest, Wales
Lives and works in Cardiff, Wales

Nia Metcalfe is a curator who has a distinct artistic element to her practice. Her curatorial pieces are becoming more self-authored and in parts could conceivably be construed as art making. Nia is currently interested in addressing the curatorial/artistic balance within her practice in order to coherently shape, inform and progress her work.

Niaís interests are broad: some general themes and threads that appear in her practice are the display of information, propaganda, making sense and nonsense, the absurd, escapism, utopia, rural/urban, commerce and consumption, the artistís political and social role and influence and how artists shape our cities, environments and communities. She is both concerned with the physicality of making and qualities of material and object, as well as the conceptual presentation of information. Working collaboratively across media and disciplines also appeals to her.
Nia is co-director of Spit & Sawdust, a multi-aspect social and community space, and is also part of Elbow Room, a curatorial group who work with artists on socially engaged projects, research and professional development. Previously she has worked for Safle public art agency and Cywaith Cymru. Nia graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2004 with a BA (Hons) Fine Art and has curated / managed numerous creative projects including If This Is Nowhere (Tom Crawford and associated programme at g39, Cardiff, 2014) and Nothing Ever Happens (OSR Projects, Somerset, 2012). She lives and works in Cardiff.
