Rhian Edwards

b. 1977, Bridgend
Lives and works in Bridgend, Wales

Rhian Edwards is a poet and musician and has delivered over 300 stage, radio and festival performances world-wide. She was appointed as writer in residence alongside Laura Reeves’ library residency for There Will Be Words, with the support of Literature Wales. Rhian was also recently awarded the first Writer in Residency position at Aberystwyth Arts Centre from March to June 2013.
Her writing practice has a natural tendency to find collaborative partnerships with practitioners in other disciplines as well as other writers. For example, following a collaboration in Bridgend town centre, she is working again with sculptor David Annand to compose a poem to be engraved in a new sculpture at Ynysawdre. She also collaborated with composer Pete Wyer in re-writing one of the Arabian Tales that was performed at St David’s Hall with the Welsh National Opera orchestra and 100-piece choir (2011-12).
Rhian’s poems are widely published in journals and magazines. Her first collection of poems Clueless Dogs (Seren) was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection 2012, while her pamphlet of poems Parade the Fib (Tall-Lighthouse), was awarded the Poetry Book Society Choice for autumn 2008. Rhian also won the John Tripp Award for Spoken Poetry 2011-2012, winning both the Judges’ and Audience award, which is the highest accolade for a performance poet in Wales.

“Rhian Edwards makes the language sing and dance. Join her campaign for the liberation of poetry from all that is dry, stuffy, insincere and boring…” – Christopher Reid
